The Himalayas: A Photographic Journey
Tuesday, December 5 from 5:30 – 7:00pm at the Manchester Community Library
Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Hubert Schriebl to lead us on a photographic journey through the Himalayan expeditions he was part of in the making of the still-definitive map of the Everest Region. This major project was sponsored by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation of Cologne, in collaboration with the German and Austrian Alpenverein, Innsbruck. There were four expeditions in all, in 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1968. In addition to guiding the mountain climbing, he also took over some of the surveying, after learning the skill from the expedition leader. He still holds the record of high-altitude surveying at 6,710 meters. Hubert also led the Dutch Himalayan expedition of 1964, making the first ascent on Manaslu North, over 7,000 meters, and has been on many expeditions and photographic assignments, including to the Arctic Circle, the North Sea, Popocatabel (Mexico), the American southwest, and Mount Kenya, another surveying expedition. This talk will also be available online via live stream. Registration is $22 per person. For more information or to register, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit www.greenmtnacademy.org.
