Double-talk on Doubleday: How a Civil War General Invented Baseball Without His Permission
Tuesday, July 21 5:30 – 7:00 pm via Zoom
Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Rowland Brucken, Professor of History at Norwich University, to talk about the origins of baseball. Why, how, and when did Abner Doubleday become the imagined inventor of America’s pastime? It is becoming more widely known that Doubleday had no connection to baseball, but why, and for what purposes, did baseball’s boosters construct an origin story with him at the epicenter? This talk will explore the founding myths of baseball’s real and fictional origins. He will also consider the broader context of the age of imperialism in America, New England sports history, and Victorian-era scandals. Registration for the talk is $10 in advance.
